When misused, the tablets are crushed and snorted or dissolved in water and injected. Like morphine, it is used for pain relief. Oxycodone is synthesized from thebaine, a third component of opium. Browse the images below to learn more about each derivative. Opium has many derivatives, including morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and heroin. The trading and production of opium spread from the Mediterranean to China by the 15th century. Opium was even thought to protect the user from being poisoned. It was also used to induce sleep and to give relief to the bowels. Opium was known to ancient Greek and Roman physicians as a powerful pain reliever. The farmer takes his crop of opium to the nearest village where he will sell it to the dealer who offers him the best price. Recently, opium has been grown in Latin America, notably Colombia and Mexico. It flourishes in dry, warm climates and the vast majority of opium poppies are grown in a narrow, 4,500-mile stretch of mountains extending across central Asia from Turkey through Pakistan and Burma. Opium is grown mainly by impoverished farmers on small plots in remote regions of the world. Today, heroin’s long journey to drug traffickers begins with the planting of opium poppy seeds. Its cultivation spread along the Silk Road, from the Mediterranean through Asia and finally to China where it was the catalyst for the Opium Wars of the mid-1800s. Many countries began to grow and process opium to expand its availability and to decrease its cost. As people learned of the power of opium, demand for it increased. The Sumerians referred to it as Hul Gil, the "joy plant." The Sumerians soon passed it on to the Assyrians, who in turn passed it on to the Egyptians. when the opium poppy was cultivated in lower Mesopotamia (Southwest Asia). The earliest reference to opium growth and use is in 3,400 B.C. As misused drugs, they are often smoked, sniffed, or injected. However, they are some of the most addictive substances known to man. Narcotics are used therapeutically to treat pain, suppress cough, alleviate diarrhea, and induce anesthesia. The term “narcotic” refers to opium, opium derivatives, and their semi-synthetic substitutes. The poppy plant, Papaver somniferum, produces opium, a powerful narcotic whose derivatives include morphine, codeine, heroin, and oxycodone.

The program cannot be used to download videos, which was perhaps what surprised me the most, as nearly every download manager I've used supports this feature. Motrix sets itself as the default torrent downloader without prompting the user, that was a bit annoying for me. If you're looking for more refined controls, I'd say you're better off with qBitTorrent or PicoTorrent. This isn't the most convenient option, but it's better than nothing. To add trackers, go to the Advanced settings page and paste the list of URLs. There is no way to view the information about peers, which also means you can't add any either. For that, you have to use the torrent file, which then opens the selective download screen. If you use a magnet link with Motrix, you can't select the contents of the torrents to download specific files. The drawback with Motrix is that you don't have extensive control over torrent downloads (compared to a proper program like qBitTorrent). I'm guessing that's because Aria2 is doing the heavy lifting here, so the download manager's interface is fairly light on resources. What surprised me was that the resource usage while downloading remained in a similar range, which for an Electron application is not bad at all. The program uses about 125-130 MB of RAM when running in the background. Motrix is an open source Electron app, it is available in an optional portable version. To use it, go to the RPC Server tab in the extension, and choose the same port, i.e., 16800. The program suggests using the Aria2 Download Manager Integration add-on for Firefox, and while it is no longer being maintained, it does work with Motrix. I used YAAW, and set 16800 as the port, and toggled the interception of downloads to Aria2c. Head to the Settings > Lab section, and you will find the recommended extensions. The program does not have official browser extensions, but works with third-party add-ons that support Aria2. Motrix is based on Aria2 like uGet and Persepolis Download Manager. The reason these lamination techniques allow for water-repellent characteristics is that the inner membranes are full of holes. Even the Castelli Gabba Jersey is made using a Windstopper laminate fabric. Gore-Tex, Thinsulate, Polartec and eVent are all internal membranes that are sandwiched between two other materials – usually something abrasion-resistant on the outside, with a soft liner on the inside. Most waterproof breathable fabrics are made from laminate materials, which usually consist of an inner fabric optimised for wicking moisture, a waterproof membrane and an outer-face fabric with a DWR treatment. Check out our guide on how to rejuvenate your waterproof cycling gear. Not to fear, though, refreshing and retreating a garment is simple and there are plenty of spray-on or wash-in options available. When this happens, the fabric no longer causes water to bead and will become saturated and heavy. However, DWR treatments wear off over time, accelerated by abrasions and some detergents. When the DWR is applied to a fabric, it creates micropegs or microspikes that protrude from the fibres and prevent water from spreading out, forcing it to form beads that slide off the fabric without seeping in. Instead, it bonds the individual fibres to help the garment shed water and prevent saturation.ĭWR treatments shed water because they increase the contact angle of moisture on a fabric by forcing a water droplet to maintain its surface tension so when you see water beading on a fabric, the DWR is hard at work. The treatment does not inhibit breathability because it doesn’t fill the gaps between the fibres. It’s not a laminate or coating but a treatment applied to the fabric’s outer surface.Īll waterproof garments, except those where the membrane is the outermost surface, receive a DWR finish. DWRĭurable water repellent, or DWR, is your wet weather gear’s first line of defence. While both achieve the same goal, they work slightly differently. Waterproof fabrics are either multi-layer laminate fabrics or regular woven fabrics that get a DWR treatment designed to keep water out. GoreTex, eVent and Windstopper membranes all use a similar construction. Better still, if the rain stops, you can take it off and put it away rather than keep wearing it long after it’s done its job. Some garments manage it by using advanced materials, others solve the problem by incorporating vents into their designs.Īside from being waterproof and breathable, it’s worth seeking out a jacket that packs down into a tiny package that’s easy to stow. The ideal solution, therefore, is a cycling jacket that combines being waterproof with breathability, which is difficult, but by no means impossible. The trouble is, the properties that allow a waterproof jacket to keep the rain off also make it difficult to deal with the damp building up on the inside. Things would be easier if it were simply a matter of keeping the rain out, but pedalling makes you hot and sweaty, and the heat and moisture you generate need an escape route. These are softshell tops that feel like a jersey but use a waterproof membrane or DWR (durable water repellent) treatment to repel precipitation. However, we’re now seeing the rise of the ‘jerket’ or rain jersey. The digital control panel for the cars’ single-zone air-conditioning are different too, with the Toyota MPV having two round knobs and an automatic function. The speaker count for both is six, including two tweeters. Toyota’s head unit measures nine inches – same as the Alza – but is more feature packed with support for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – the Alza only gets wired Android Auto on the AV. Getting into both cars, the Veloz and Alza share a nearly identical main dashboard, but the design of the former’s air vents is unique to the model. The Alza’s palette consists of Vintage Brown, Elegant Black, Garnet Red, Glittering Silver and Ivory White, although some are exclusive to H and AV variants. Other options are monotone and include Metallic Bluish Black, Red Metallic and White. Meanwhile, Toyota says that you won’t need to “worry about damaging the undercarriage while going over rough terrain, speed bumps or potholes” with their taller offering.īefore moving inside, it should be pointed out that only the Veloz can be ordered with a two-tone paint scheme with the Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic hues. If you prefer the low-slung MPV look, the Alza is the one to have with its car-like ground clearance that Perodua says allows for easy entry and exit of passengers and cargo (lower load floor). The 30 mm difference boils down to ground clearance, with the Veloz having 190 mm, which is 30 mm more than the Alza with 160 mm (150 mm for the base X). The Toyota MPV is also slightly wider at 1,750 mm (+20 mm) due to its protruding wheel arches, which are the opposite of the Alza’s that has its recessed.Īnother significant aspect is height, with the Veloz measuring 1,700 mm tall compared to the Alza AV that is 1,670 mm. As for dimensions, both have the same 2,750 mm wheelbase, but the Veloz’s bumpers mean it is 50 mm longer than the Alza AV at 4,475 mm. Other exterior differences are the wheels and dimensions, with the former being 17-inch units on the Veloz, while the Alza tops out at 16 inches. The Alza’s setup sees the reflectors positioned further down within its own distinctive surround, and unlike its close sibling, it lacks an indented silver centre section that mimics the look of a skid plate. Other notable differences are the bumpers, with the Veloz having horizontally aligned reflectors on black surrounds to closely mirror what you see at the front. Moving to the rear, both cars share a similar taillight assembly, but only the Veloz gets a red line leading to the central emblem and a model script above the number plate recess. On the mention of lighting, the LED headlamps on the Toyota MPV come with LED daytime running lights (DRLs are optional for Alza with the GearUp body kit) and are bridged by a chrome strip at the top of the grille, which traces its way above the lighting clusters, along the fenders and windowline and terminating near the D-pillars – the Alza doesn’t get the chrome strips on its fenders. The Veloz’s fog lamps are more prominent by being triple-element units arranged horizontally on its trim and is further garnished by T-shaped chrome accents. The X-themed profile of the Alza’s bumper is also unique to accommodate its grille, which is joined by LED fog lamps integrated into the angular black trim. 2022 Toyota Veloz (left), Perodua Alza AV (right) |
